THE PIG-in the South Downs

Countryside steeped in history

THE PIG-in the South Downs sits in the heart of the National Park, surrounded by rolling hills, ancient woodland and some of England’s best vineyards. It’s a place for long rambles, lazy afternoons in the garden and glasses of something local as the sun sets. With market towns, historic estates and walking trails all around, this PIG is made for proper country days.

Wander the hills

Rolling chalk hills, hidden valleys and ancient woodlands stretch for miles, dotted with flint villages, country pubs and historic estates. It’s countryside at its most English.

Step outside and you’ll find trails in every direction – from gentle rambles across farmland to bracing climbs onto the Downs with views that go on forever. Of course, the South Downs Way passes nearby, perfect for walkers looking to tick off a stretch of one of Britain’s best-loved long-distance paths.

Stories set in stone

Arundel is a picture-perfect market town with a towering castle and riverside walks, while Petworth is known for its antiques, galleries and grand National Trust house.

A little further afield, Chichester brings Roman history, a cathedral and a thriving arts scene. Each has centuries of history to uncover, all within easy reach of the house.

Vineyards and wine

This is wine country, and it starts right at our door. Our own vineyard surrounds the house, with rows of vines soaking up the South Downs sun.

Nyetimber, Tinwood and Ridgeview are all close by, producing award-winning sparkling wines that have put English wine on the map. Most offer tours and tastings, making it easy to spend a day among the vines before heading back to THE PIG for another glass.
